Confused by today’s music industry? Learn what independent artists actually need to know.
Coach: Nat Cummins
Music industry consultant and founder of Red Tape Music
Language: English
The music industry is often presented as a collection of disconnected parts: labels, managers, publishers, distributors, booking agents and streaming platforms. But understanding how these pieces fit together is often more valuable than understanding any single role in isolation.
This interactive workshop is designed for independent artists, self-managing musicians, emerging managers and anyone looking to better understand the business side of music. Together we’ll explore how the modern music industry actually functions, how money and rights move through the system, and how different industry professionals support an artist’s career at different stages of development.
Through real-world examples, discussion and practical exercises, participants will learn how the recording industry, publishing, live performance, management, distribution, sync licensing and collection societies connect. We’ll also examine common industry myths, discuss whether artists really need every part of the traditional industry structure, and explore how independent artists can make informed decisions about building their team.
By the end of the session, participants will have a clearer understanding of how the music industry works as a whole, how revenue flows through the ecosystem, and how to navigate their own careers with greater confidence.
